What happens when you bring together a group of women excited to develop their potential in cycling and triathlon? Plenty of candid questions, lessons learned, friendships made, not to mention lots of laughs!
Last year purplepatch fitness hosted its first ever women’s camp here in San Francisco, California and we will be repeating the camp in 2016! purplepatch fitness founder, Matt Dixon and purplepatch fitness bike director, Paul Buick, (recently featured in Triathlete Magazine) will coach the 3-day camp.
“The perfect balance of great training, learning, and fun. It was a fantastic group of women of all ages and talent levels, who together were given so much information about the challenges of being a female athlete. My everyday training and racing benefited greatly by this camp.” (Triathlete, Canada)
The camp is primarily focused on developing cycling skills, but will also include an extensive swim session, three run sessions off the bike and in-class topics over the long weekend. A combination of practical sessions and classroom based learning will cover everything from appropriate bike fit, form and posture across swim, bike and run as well as women’s specific health and nutrition discussions with leading experts. Purplepatch professional athletes will also be on hand during the weekend to share their personal experience and advice!
“It was a great weekend of training, but for me the value was in the education I received. We practiced cycling skills like cornering and managing rollers at sites that allowed us to repeat the skills while Paul gave us real time instruction and feedback.” (Triathlete, Marin County)
Education is always at the forefront with the purplepatch team, so each swim, bike and run session will focus on specific skills to be understood and put into practice, giving each athlete the tools to continue their athletic development long after the camp is over.
What kind of cycling skills will I learn?
The classroom-based sessions will cover everything from bike fit and how a rider interacts with the bike. Once out on the road, we will practice cornering, descending, climbing and TT skills. This will include when to ride seated and/or out of the saddle, how to read and manage terrain, as well as appropriate gear selection.
I’m not a triathlete but I cycle, can I still attend the camp?
Yes! The camp is ~75% focused on cycling skills development and cycling practice. In addition, the classroom sessions on women’s health and nutrition for endurance athletes are equally applicable for all female athletes, regardless of sport. You might even be tempted to join an easy run or swim session too!
What is included in the cost of the camp?
The camp includes all coaching and SAG support across the three days of camp. A range of athlete fuel will be provided on a daily basis and includes fruit, water, energy bars and gels. Lunch is also provided on Friday and Saturday. Rumor has it you will also receive a little purplepatch “swag bag”!
What level of cycling ability is necessary to participate in the camp?
The camp caters for beginners through to advanced athletes. Camp directors will scale each workout according to individual abilities. The camp is limited to 14 attendees allowing plenty of time for one-on-one instruction and attention from camp coaches.
Where will the rides take place?
We will be riding in San Francisco and the beautiful countryside of Marin County, including riding across the Golden Gate Bridge! The terrain will include hills and rolling terrain, as well as some closed road riding for skills practice in a safe environment.
