What purplepatch means to me
With the emphasis of most coaches and athletes being on training the house down all day every day, it is nice to have a more balanced and comprehensive approach to training. Purplepatch to me means working smarter and not necessarily harder!
Even though I had gotten some podium results in my 2014 pro debut, I realized that my self-coaching had gotten me as far as it would and that I was simply re-inventing the wheel by continuing to do so. Training with various swim and run groups in Boulder, I was always under the eye of various coaches, but I did not have an overall guidance or direction. I first learned of purplepatch from Kevin (Collington) at Challenge Rancho Cordova in October 2014, during which he smashed the bike leg and we both rode minutes into the field. I was impressed by his bike progression, so I looked up purplepatch that day and it turned out lots of hot-shot pros had achieved great results under Matt's guidance. So for the winter and spring months afterwards I did Kevin's purplepatch bike workouts that he would upload to Strava... :) In the middle of 2015, after some solid off-the-front performances followed by some blow-ups sometimes and podiums other times, I decided to get in touch with Matt for proper coaching and no more Strava stalking!
